One semitone is one piano key, twelve make an octave, and every key change is just a count of semitones. Moving a song from C major to D major is +2; from A minor to F minor is -4 (or +8, an octave apart). The slider runs from -12 to +12, so any key is reachable in one move. Small shifts of one to three semitones keep the song sounding like itself; five or more starts to change its character, which is sometimes the point.

This pitch changer works the way tape and vinyl do: it resamples the audio, so raising the pitch shortens the track and lowering it lengthens it. Shifting up two semitones makes the song about 12 percent faster; shifting down two makes it about 11 percent slower. For key changes that is usually fine, because the tempo change is small and the song still feels the same, and for nightcore and vaporwave edits it is exactly the effect people want. What this tool does not do is change the pitch while holding the tempo fixed, or change the tempo while holding the pitch fixed; for that you need the pitch-shift or time-stretch in a DAW.
